As part of our commitment to providing biological dental care that focuses on caring for the patient’s whole body and well-being instead of just one small area of the mouth, we are proud to offer a proven, effective treatment called ozone therapy as part of many of the dental procedures we perform at our practice. Read on to learn more about how this natural gas can enhance your dental experience not only when you’re in the chair, but after your treatment as well!

WHAT IS OZONE THERAPY?

Ozone, also called O3, is a colorless gas that consists of three oxygen atoms. Many people have heard of ozone in relation to Earth’s atmosphere—a layer of ozone surrounds Earth and protects it from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. However, as early as the late 1800s, ozone began to be used in medical applications, and over time, studies have shown that it is highly effective at:

  • Killing bacteria, fungi, yeast, and viruses
  • Stimulating oxygen metabolism (the intake and processing of oxygen)
  • Activating the immune system and having anti-inflammatory effects

When used properly, ozone therapy is safe and very gentle on human tissues. Ozone therapy has been used in the treatment of over 100 diseases and is also used in holistic dentistry for its therapeutic effects during and after procedures in the oral cavity.

HOW OZONE THERAPY IS USED IN DENTISTRY

Our practice uses ozone therapy in both gas and liquid form in a variety of dental procedures. The uses of ozone therapy at Virtue Dental Care include:

Cavity/Decay Treatment: After removing decay and/or mercury filling material from a tooth, we gently apply ozone gas to disinfect the cavity before placing a new filling or crown on the affected tooth.

Periodontal Treatment: As part of gum disease treatment, ozone gas and ozone water are used to irrigate the gum pockets caused by periodontal disease, helping to kill the bad bacteria that cause disease. Ozonated oil is also used on the dental tools to remove calculus that builds up on the teeth and irritates gums.

Tooth Sensitivity Treatment: For sensitive root surfaces, ozone gas is brushed along the gumline to greatly reduce sensitivity so you can return to fully enjoying your favorite foods and beverages.

Oral Surgery Procedures: Following a tooth extraction or other surgical procedure in the mouth, ozone water is used to irrigate the surgical site. Ozone gas is also placed in the soft tissue surrounding the site to reduce infection, as well as reduce post-operative pain.

Cavitation/NICO Therapy: Ozone gas may also be useful in the treatment of bone lesions, such as cavitations and osteonecrosis because it can improve circulation in the area and stimulate your body’s natural healing response.
