Dentures are designed to fit snugly within your mouth whether you are speaking or eating. Over time, however, they may begin to loosen due to changes in your gums or jaw formation. These changes will occur over time and maybe hard to notice at first. As the tissues continue to change or the dentures start to show signs of wear and tear, you will begin to notice signs that your dentures are slipping or becoming loose. As soon as you begin to experience any of the following signs, you will need to contact your dentist to check your dentures.
One of the first signs that your dentures are not fitting correctly is that they will no longer form a proper seal when set in place. When your dentures are put in your mouth, a vacuum is created between your gums and inside walls of the denture. This suction keeps the denture firmly in place. If your gums begin to recede or your dentures become damaged in any way, this can prevent that seal from forming.
Any changes in how your dentures fit within your mouth can cause your dentures to slip when speaking or trying to eat. The bigger the gap between your gums and your dentures, the more difficulty you will have trying to keep them in place. While adhesives may work to an extent, they won’t solve the problem completely.
Dentures that don’t fit properly can cause blisters and lesions to form along your cheeks or gums. The continued friction can cause open wounds to form that may become infected. Over time, scar tissue may form that could make it hard for your dentures to function properly.
