Your safety is our concern
The FDA has advised ‘vulnerable’ groups - pregnant and lactating women; women trying to conceive; fetuses, infants and younger kids; those with neurological or kidney issues; and those allergic to mercury – to avoid dental amalgam. We take this advice very seriously. That’s why we consider mercury-free smiles as a priority!

Benefits of dental inlays and onlays

Inlays and onlays are a more conservative alternative to a dental crown that allows you to preserve more of your natural tooth. They also allow Dr. Virtue to avoid using metal fillings. They are typically used when one of your molars or premolars has too much damage to support a composite filling, but the damage isn’t so extensive that they require a full crown. Porcelain is a durable, biocompatible material that blends in with your natural teeth and can last over 20 years with proper care.

Like a dental crown, inlays and onlays are bonded in place to protect your teeth. Inlays are designed to sit inside your teeth’s chewing surface, and onlays cover one or more sides. Dr. Virtue uses CEREC technology to craft your ceramic restoration in the office so you can finish your restoration in a single visit.

What to expect during your appointment

If you have a large cavity, Dr. Virtue may recommend a porcelain inlay or onlay to protect your teeth. He’ll start by gently removing the tooth decay and use ozone therapy to sterilize the site and strengthen your tooth. Once the infection is removed, he’ll reshape the tooth to make space for the inlay or onlay.

Once your tooth is prepared, he’ll use a small camera to create a digital impression of your tooth and use the CEREC computer to design your restoration. He’ll choose a ceramic block that matches the shade of your teeth and insert it into the machine. Within 15 minutes, your inlay or onlay will be ready, and he’ll check the fit and bond it into place.

Don’t wait to treat tooth decay. The longer the infection spreads, the more likely you will need a root canal or tooth extraction. Contact Dr. Virtue in Yadkinville today at (336) 606-0040 to schedule an appointment.
