Your safety is our concern
The FDA has advised ‘vulnerable’ groups - pregnant and lactating women; women trying to conceive; fetuses, infants and younger kids; those with neurological or kidney issues; and those allergic to mercury – to avoid dental amalgam. We take this advice very seriously. That’s why we consider mercury-free smiles as a priority!

What are porcelain crowns?

Porcelain crowns are used to strengthen and protect broken teeth, replace missing teeth, or to support a dental bridge. The tooth-colored porcelain shell is placed over an existing tooth or dental implant to improve the appearance of the smile as well as preserve the natural function of the teeth. Porcelain is a material that very closely resembles tooth enamel, which means that porcelain crowns will end up looking just like nearby natural teeth.

Why patients may need a crown:

There are several different scenarios that could warrant dental crown restoration. Decay, gum disease, and injury to the mouth can all lead to a damaged tooth that requires a porcelain crown. If you develop a toothache or encounter damage to the tooth, you should take the following steps:

  • Schedule an appointment with your Yadkinville, NC dentist as soon as possible. Damaged teeth can continue to break or become infected which can cause a great deal of pain and make everyday tasks like chewing difficult. It’s important to seek prompt dental care.
  • Try rinsing the mouth with salt water and take over the counter pain medications. Cold compresses can be used on the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Try to avoid chewing on the side of the mouth with pain. Eating soft foods can help with this.

What are CEREC same day crowns?

Traditional crowns are typically placed in two appointments. During the first appointment, the damaged tooth is assessed and treated appropriately and then molds are taken of the tooth and sent to an offsite lab for custom fabrication. The patient is fitted with a temporary crown during this waiting period.

CEREC crowns are placed the same day as your first appointment. This is accomplished through CAD/CAM technology that allows us to take digital impressions, design the crown and fabricate it right in the office.

During your appointment for a CEREC crown, our team will treat the damaged or infected tooth and then use 3D imaging to create a digital image of the mouth. With CEREC, there is no need for sticky, bad tasting impression material. The images of the teeth are used to measure the area for placement of the crown and then the CAD technology is used to design the crown. When the design is complete, that information is sent to the milling machine for custom fabrication of the crown. When the crown is complete, it is checked for proper fit in the mouth and any small adjustments that are needed can be made at this time. At the end of the appointment, you will leave with a brand-new smile.
