Traditional ceramic crowns can take over two weeks to prepare, and you’ll have to come in for a second visit. In the meantime, you’ll be sent home with a temporary crown that may fall out or break if you’re not careful. Additionally, you may have to bite into foul-tasting alginate multiple times to craft your permanent and temporary crowns.

CEREC utilizes advanced technology to 3D print ceramic inlays, onlays, and crowns for tooth restorations. Like traditional crowns, they can be used to improve your teeth’s appearance or prevent tooth loss after treating advanced decay. They can also protect cracked or chipped teeth from further damage or be used over dental implants to replace missing teeth.

After Dr. Virtue prepares your tooth, he will use a specialized camera to take your mouth’s digital impressions. The images will be uploaded into the CEREC machine, which Dr. Virtue will then use to design your restoration. He will match the shade of your natural teeth, and then the machine will mill your crown out of a ceramic blank within 15 minutes. Once it’s ready, it will be bonded to your tooth, and you can resume your normal routine shortly after you leave the office.

Caring for your restoration

Ceramic crowns require the same hygiene routine as your other teeth. For the most part, they restore full functionality to your teeth, but you should be wary of chewing ice or hard candies with your crown.
